Mark P: Mai Sato, winner of the IPDFC, was wearing typical gymnast clothing, no shoes, and the lights seemed pretty bright.

There are a lot of different styles of pole dancing out there, so you can't generalize just from this video clip. The attributes of strong, liberated femininity come from what these women learn individually from the art of Pole Dancing. The one thing they all will learn is accomplishing a goal.

I am often awestruck when I watch this form of dance expression. I am close to the idea/activity of pole dancing but would probably break my neck doing the things some of these girls demonstrate. People who attempt pole dancing for the first time, realize they have muscles they never new existed! Its a fantastic form of exercise, art and creativity. Appropriately, the idea and understanding that Pole Dancing offers much more than what you see at strip clubs is gaining momentum.... Yay!

I don't doubt the physical fitness and skill required to pole dance at a high level. Obviously it has quite a lot in common with gymnastics. Stick that pole in a gymnastics arena, strip it (pun intended) of its typical associations, and nobody blinks twice. The differences here seem to be: skimpier clothes, high heels, and dim lighting (often referred to as "mood lighting"). Perhaps these are in fact the attributes of strong, liberated femininity and it's only my patriarchal, strip-club-aholic self making it seem sleazy?

These women are strong and beautiful... I challenge you Mark, or anyone else critical of pole dancing, to have first-hand experience before passing judgement. I find it interesting that men who frequent strip clubs are usually the first to put down pole dancing seen outside that arena. I believe they put it down because the women aren't dancing for men anymore, they are dancing for themselves. I admit, I was one of those that judged too before I actually tried it myself. I have come to learn that pole dancing can be an amazing workout and incredibly liberating. When I'm in class there are no oogling men, there is no nudity. The women in this growing community are supportive of each other and embrace their sexuality. They are unapologetic about their feminine qualities, and I think that scares the critics more than anything.

Nice choice of the Black Keys.

To be honest, though, it seems like gymnastics with a bit of sleaze thrown in...
