I attended the gathering in Washington state in 1981 It transformed my life. I woke up on the first morning to find a German woman sleeping next to me. It was raining, and she sought shelter where she could. I will never forget the tolerance, love and acceptance that I experienced there. Right wing hatred and intolerance was unknown then. Even the Forest Service was supportive and accepting. I can only hope that we can get back to that level of love an acceptance.

thanks for sharing your perspective and positive intention. Yes, for me, asking permission for photography respects people and the nature of being. It seems that your pictures were taking something from the gathering for your job. that's a drain. taking taking. So respect, leave the taking. peace.

very informative...ive been living "out of the system" for awhile now, and i'm convinced that sanity and harmony can only begin with the individual first, and then spread exponentially with gatherings of like minded people like this...ive never been to a gathering but i intend to this year, if medicine man, greg, or the author here have any input i'd welcome it...i can relate to your frustration as a photographer as with the people shots/rainbow,esp if its your art.. but, yes...some things are meant to be experienced, not documented...good piece...peace and light

In regard to Aaron, and the ranger interview, let me say; I've done recycling for a national, and have been to over a dozen nationals. I can tell you, that when the last Rainbows leave a gathering, there is ZERO trash. Everthing that can be recycled, is. All food waste is composted. All latrines are filled in with earth and lyme. All trash is hauled to the dump and/or taken home, bag by bag, by individuals. Compacted soil is hoed up. Fire pits are broken up. Sites are naturalized. We love mother earth, and take great care and pride in what we do. IMHO, Folks shouldn't criticize what they haven't witnessed, through to the end, first hand. Love & All Good Things, Greg

I don't know Arron. but IO wold like to invit him to revisit any of the 37 sites and see that the family has always left the gathering in better shape than they found it! The hyoung woman from the Forest Service has not been at on before or she would know that it is not the Service that does all that clean-up, but the Rainbows who stay on in great number not just "a few" as she believes, and sometimes, when things have been really heavy - like the outbreaks of dysentery at the first gathering and the first Arizona gathering that made people flee leaving all their stuff and shit behind - we have stayed for weeks to put it back together. I was one of hat crew for about 16 years at the beginning, now the young people are going right on with the spirit and the tradition in a good way. As I said in the film = this is America, but more than the spirit of freedom, it is the spirit of togetherness and true communith. The writer wonders how we affect orld peace - it is from all the communities that get formed from the gatherings, all the regional gatherings, and all the Rainbow gatherings that have spread across the world and reached out to the young people in their love for closeness, cooperation, creativity and - the Earth.

This is something that sounds absolutely spectacular. I'm only 17 but I have been trying to spread the love and peace around and nobody listens and it eventually becomes very stressful, this would be a wonderful place to go, feel like people are on my side instead of against me. When and where is the next one taking place???

Interesting how these folks who object to the land impact never seem to raise a peep when large swaths of our forest are sold off to be clear cut of used for cattle ranging. Cattle ranging goes on all over the country ruining watersheds. And I'm certain wildlife adjust much easier to our temporary presence in their home than the complete and wanton destruction that results from our unsustainable, toxic-spewing, people-poisoning, ocean-destroying, corporate-sponsored suicide machine!

Unfortunately, this event has become a joke. The destruction brought on by the participants flies in the face of what they claim is their intention. Love the land....but in the meantime lets trash the national park. They pretend to espouse living with nature, yet leave huge traces and trash in the very park they claim to love. Case in point, you photo showing a mud pit. Not sure, how these individuals defend this as "loving the earth". Seems to me, they are effectively, sh*tting on it.

Very informative. There is so much more to the Rainbow Gathering than I thought. You definitely found the perfect guy to interview. I'll probably go check it out next year.
