I’ve just re-entered civilization after a very long series of hitch hiking adventures from the south-western part of Alaska up to the north-eastern edge. A total of nine rides got me about 500 miles and ended with stale mate at 11:30 pm in the freezing rain in the middle of nowhere. Luckily, a pickup truck from heaven came blaring down the dark road and picked me up and took me to a compound made up of trailers. I shared a camper with a meth-head who mumbled into the night about his commercial fishing adventures. Woke to a warm greeting from the pickup lady, who made me oatmeal and coffee. Returned to the road with a thumb held out and this time only waited an hour. This ride turned out to be the mother of them all. Forty-five year old adventure-woman. Married four times. Currently is a gold miner. What stories!
Eight more hours to go on a dirt road that ends in Eagle, Ak–the end of the world. Hope someone is going that way. Bush planes are $350. ouch. Adventures in AK. What a great place.
